Creating beautiful spaces
With a passion for interior design and a penchant for sourcing vintage pieces, my journey began by crafting hospitality spaces. Over time, my expertise has grown to encompass both residential & commercial spaces. Based in Ambleside, in the heart of the stunning Lake District, I work across the North of England & beyond.
What I do
I'm Sarah McLean, founder and interior designer at Lakeland Interior Design.
Based in the Lake District, I work with clients to create characterful, comfortable homes that feel collected rather than overly designed.
I've always been fascinated by houses — not simply how they look, but why some work beautifully and others somehow don't. I love seeing the potential in a property, finding ways to improve awkward spaces and combining new pieces with antiques, vintage finds and things a client already owns.
My approach is practical as well as creative. I believe good interior design isn't necessarily about spending more; it's about knowing where to invest, what to keep and which changes will make the greatest difference.
I work closely with my clients and deliberately take on a limited number of projects, from individual rooms and colour consultations to renovations, holiday properties and complete homes.
More recently, I've brought that same way of looking at houses to my Pre-Purchase Property & Design Consultations — helping clients understand the possibilities and compromises in a property before they buy it.
Above all, I want the homes I work on to feel individual, welcoming and unmistakably their owners’ — considered and beautiful, but never obviously ‘interior-designed'.
My services span from advising on colour schemes and sourcing unique vintage pieces to comprehensive interior schemes, providing turn-key solutions specifically curated for holiday lets as well as residential projects. Mindful of my clients' budgets, I take pride in my resourcefulness, strategically allocating funds for maximum impact.
Recent endeavours include the ground-up renovation of a luxury Windermere 'eco-house' holiday let on the lake, furnishing a spacious Victorian rental home in Altrincham for an American family relocating to Manchester, and consulting on a major residential renovation project in Ambleside.
Each project I undertake embodies my design ethos: infusing character, comfort, and a profound sense of place and home into every property.
I understand that clients have varying preferences, some prefer a more hands-off approach while others actively collaborate throughout. I welcome and accommodate both styles.
I deliberately take on a limited number of projects at a time, ensuring a nurturing approach from inception to completion.
